SmartSens may broaden LOFIC smartphone sensors with multiple 50MP models and a new 200MP telephoto option

LOFIC imaging tech has mostly been treated like a flagship-only feature so far, but that might not stay true for long. A new leak suggests SmartSens is preparing a broader push that could bring LOFIC to more smartphone camera systems through several new sensors aimed at different roles.

The report says SmartSens is working on multiple 50MP parts, including the SC596XS, SC570XS, and SC540XS. These are said to cover sensor sizes such as 1/1.28 inch, 1/1.56 inch, and 1/2.5 inch, with positioning that could make them suitable for telephoto use in upcoming phones. There’s also mention of a dual-LOFIC solution under evaluation, which hints that the company may be exploring even more advanced HDR handling for future mobile cameras.

At the higher end, the leak also points to a new 200MP telephoto sensor with LOFIC and a 1/1.56-inch format. If that detail holds up, it would be one of the more ambitious telephoto sensor directions we’ve seen in the mobile market, especially as brands keep chasing more range and more detail without giving up dynamic range performance.

The source behind the leak used the abbreviation STW, which is widely believed to refer to SmartSens, the Chinese CMOS sensor maker. That lines up with earlier reports that exposed the SCC90XS, a 200MP 1/1.28-inch flagship main sensor with LOFIC support.

For context, LOFIC stands for lateral overflow integration capacitors. In simple terms, it’s a next-generation HDR imaging approach that lets a single pixel handle charge in both linear and logarithmic ways. That helps expand dynamic range and makes it easier for a phone camera to preserve highlight and shadow detail in difficult high-contrast scenes.

Up to now, this kind of hardware-level HDR capability has mainly shown up in a small number of top-tier phones. The latest leak suggests that may be changing. If SmartSens really is preparing a lineup of 50MP and 200MP LOFIC-enabled sensors, more brands could start bringing stronger high-dynamic-range imaging to telephoto and flagship camera systems instead of limiting it to a single headline main sensor.

The same tipster also claims a separate 200MP 1/1.28-inch LOFIC continuous-zoom solution is in development, and some observers think it could be tied to a future Xiaomi Ultra model. That part is still speculative, but the broader takeaway is clear: LOFIC may be moving from a niche flagship talking point into a wider camera-sensor trend.
