Samsung’s first tri-fold phone may be on the way out far sooner than expected, but that apparently isn’t the end of the story for the form factor. A new leak says the company is already working on a follow-up, tentatively referred to as the Galaxy Z TriFold 2, and the next version is said to be both lighter and thinner than the original model.
According to details shared by leaker yeux112 and cited by IT Home, Samsung has confirmed that sales of the current Galaxy Z TriFold will be discontinued after just three months on the market. At the same time, the company is reportedly developing two hybrid-style devices behind the scenes: a direct successor to the tri-fold model and a separate product built around a rollable OLED display.
The report says the new hinge designed for the Galaxy Z TriFold 2 has already completed most of its validation work. If that timeline holds, the device could arrive around the middle of 2027. The leak also suggests Samsung wants the upcoming model to come in only slightly thicker than the Galaxy Z Fold 7, which is said to measure just 8.9 mm when folded.
That would be a notable target for a tri-fold device, since this category has to balance a much more complex hinge structure with durability, battery room, and overall weight. A slimmer and lighter chassis would directly address one of the biggest barriers facing foldables that push beyond the standard book-style design.
The second product mentioned in the leak is just as interesting. Samsung is also said to be prototyping a device that uses a rollable OLED panel, potentially drawing from Samsung Display’s Slidable Flex family. Unlike the motor-driven concepts the company has shown at trade events such as CES and MWC, this prototype is reportedly built around a manual sliding mechanism instead.
Once expanded, that rollable screen is expected to reach about 7 inches. The leak adds that the device could end up thinner than earlier show-floor concepts, which suggests Samsung is still trying to make the hardware feel practical rather than just experimental. If the project moves into mass production, the launch window could fall in late 2027 or early 2028.
For now, none of this is official product guidance from Samsung, and timelines for unusual form factors can shift quickly. Even so, the broader takeaway is clear: Samsung doesn’t appear ready to abandon the idea of devices that go beyond traditional foldables. Between a lighter Galaxy Z TriFold 2 and a possible rollable OLED product, the company seems to be keeping multiple next-generation display formats in active development.
