Google Pixel 10 phones may block Android downgrades after future bootloader update

Google may be preparing a stricter software policy for the Pixel 10 family. According to a report cited by Android Authority, future updates for most Pixel 10 models could make it impossible to roll back to an older Android build once a new bootloader version is installed.

The change is said to affect the main Pixel 10 lineup, while the Pixel 10a is currently expected to be excluded. After the relevant update lands, the devices would enable anti-rollback protection, effectively tying the hardware to a newer software baseline and preventing users from flashing an older system image in the usual way.

This mechanism is part of Android Verified Boot. In practice, once the bootloader accepts and authenticates a newer system version, it records that state and refuses to load older software builds afterward. For everyday users, that means a routine system update could permanently close the downgrade path.

The policy can improve security because it stops attackers from forcing a phone back onto older software with known vulnerabilities. At the same time, it can create headaches for enthusiasts and repair-minded users who rely on downgrades for troubleshooting, testing, or recovering from unstable updates.

If a future update causes serious issues, affected users may need to sideload a full OTA package instead of simply returning to a previous release. That kind of recovery process is less convenient and, if handled incorrectly, could leave the device unusable. The report also notes that Google has used similar protection before, including on the Pixel 6 series when it blocked rollbacks to Android 12.

For now, this remains a pre-release software report rather than an official product announcement. Still, it suggests Google is continuing to prioritize tighter platform security on upcoming Pixel 10 devices, even if that comes at the cost of flexibility for advanced users.
