Apple May Let Users Pick Third-Party AI Models in iOS 27, With Google and Anthropic Already in Testing

Apple is reportedly preparing a broader AI model selection system for its next major software cycle. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 are expected to let users choose from supported outside AI providers for device-level features such as text generation, editing, and image creation.

That would be a notable expansion of Apple’s current setup. Right now, Apple Intelligence only offers ChatGPT as a third-party option inside a limited set of features, including Siri, Writing Tools, and Image Playground.

Gurman had already reported in March that Apple was working on a similar approach for Siri, allowing users to swap ChatGPT out for other external chatbots. This newer report suggests Apple is now extending that model across more system features instead of keeping it confined to a few tools.

People familiar with the work say the update will let users pick from supported services that have been added through their App Store apps. So far, Apple has reportedly tested integrations internally with Google and Anthropic. The company declined to comment publicly.

Inside internal builds of iOS 27, Apple is said to call the feature “Extensions.” Users would manage it in Settings, where they could choose the underlying AI model used by Apple Intelligence features.

Developers have already spotted a related prompt in the iOS 27 beta. The wording says Extensions let users access generative AI capabilities from installed apps through Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground, and other Apple Intelligence features whenever needed.

Apple is also said to be planning a dedicated App Store section for compatible AI apps, while still continuing to offer its own in-house models. At the same time, the company will reportedly warn users in the final release that it isn’t responsible for content generated by outside systems.

For users, that shift could make third-party AI models far more practical on Apple devices. For partners such as Google and Anthropic, it would also open the door to much deeper system-level exposure. Just as importantly, it would end OpenAI’s current exclusive position inside Apple’s AI platform.

Gurman added that Apple once had high expectations for its ChatGPT integration when the partnership was introduced in 2024, but real-world usage later came in below what both companies had expected. Tensions between the two sides have also reportedly grown, with OpenAI actively recruiting Apple engineers for AI hardware work.

Another reported upgrade would let users choose different Siri voice styles so it’s easier to distinguish between Apple’s own systems and outside models such as ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude.

Bloomberg had previously reported that Apple is also preparing a more advanced Siri experience with its own standalone app. Other planned changes tied to the same update are said to include a Siri mode inside the Camera app, new AI editing features in Photos, and support for creating custom credentials in Wallet.
