That puts the gap at 0.29mm, or roughly 3.5% thicker than the published number. The source says the reason becomes obvious in real-world photos: the front and rear glass panels sit slightly higher than the metal frame. Sony appears to have measured only the thinnest point of the body, which is the metal mid-frame, rather than the full outer thickness users actually feel in hand.
OnLeaks called the specification misleading, arguing that the official number doesn’t reflect the phone’s true maximum thickness. To be fair, a difference of 0.29mm is unlikely to change everyday use in any dramatic way. Even so, the report is a useful reminder that spec sheets don’t always tell the whole story, especially when brands choose measurement methods that highlight the most flattering number.
The same issue shows up elsewhere in the market too. Many phone makers still avoid listing how far the camera module protrudes, which means buyers rarely see the device’s actual thickest point on a product page. Some brands also promote the slimmest color option when different finishes may come in at slightly different dimensions.
For buyers comparing premium hardware side by side, the takeaway is simple: official dimensions are useful, but they’re not always the final word. In cases like the Sony thickness claim, hands-on checks can offer a more complete picture than the headline figure on the box.
