Google is working on a major upgrade to its file-sharing platform. According to a report by Android Authority, Google’s Quick Share now supports direct interoperability with Apple AirDrop. This new capability enables Android phones to seamlessly transfer files, photos, and videos to iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers without requiring third-party apps.
Intriguingly, the rollout pattern has taken a non-traditional route. Google has enabled the AirDrop cross-compatibility feature on several Pixel models, including the budget-friendly Pixel 8a, while older high-end flagships like the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro do not yet have access. This has left some Pixel 8 Pro users puzzled, though signs of the required background files have already begun appearing on their devices.
The technical implementation relies on a new software component known as the Quick Share Extension, paired with a background service configuration called “mosey_server”. While the extension has been detected in recent Pixel 8 Pro firmware builds, the server file is currently missing, meaning Google likely needs to flip a server-side switch before these older models can communicate with iOS devices.
As of today, the official list of devices supporting the Quick Share to AirDrop feature includes the Samsung Galaxy S26, S25, and S24 series, the Galaxy Z Fold and Flip 6 and 7 models, the Pixel 10 and 9 series, and the Pixel 8a. Selected flagship devices from Xiaomi, OnePlus, OPPO, vivo, and Honor are also on the compatibility list, with Google promising that the Motorola Razr Fold 2026, OPPO Find X8 series, and Honor Magic 8 Pro will receive the update shortly.
