China Mobile Hong Kong (CMHK) has officially announced that it will fully terminate its legacy 2G network services starting June 23, 2026. This follows the operator’s complete shutdown of its 3G services in late June 2025.
According to the official announcement, the CMHK network will no longer support 2G or 3G technologies after June 23, 2026. To ensure uninterrupted calling, SMS, and data connectivity, current mobile users registered on CMHK’s network must confirm that both cellular data services and VoLTE calling (High-Definition Voice) have been activated on their devices.
Furthermore, visitors traveling to Hong Kong using China Mobile global roaming packages, weekly passes, or daily packages are advised to apply for and enable international roaming features beforehand to prevent any service interruptions once the legacy network goes offline.
The primary driver behind this network adjustment is the sharp decline in market demand for legacy 2G services in the region. As of November 2025, active 2G subscribers accounted for less than 2.3% of CMHK’s total customer base. In Hong Kong’s broader telecom landscape, other major carriers have already completed their 2G exits: Hutchison Telecommunications (3 Hong Kong) ended 2G service on September 30, 2021; SmarTone followed suit on October 14, 2022; and HKT completed its shutdown on November 8, 2024. As the last telecom provider still operating a 2G network in Hong Kong, CMHK’s upcoming 2G network shutdown will mark the official end of the 2G era in the region.
