Gurman says Apple's first iPhone Fold could be the biggest iPhone redesign yet

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says he has high expectations for Apple’s first iPhone Fold, calling it what could become the most significant design shift in the iPhone lineup so far.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman argued that earlier milestones like the iPhone 4, iPhone 6, and iPhone X were all major turning points, but said the iPhone Fold would stand out because it introduces an entirely new hardware form factor rather than just refining the familiar slab design.

Based on the current wave of reports, Apple’s first foldable iPhone is expected to use a book-style layout similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series. The idea is straightforward: keep a conventional outer screen for quick tasks, then unfold the device for a larger internal display when users want more room for gaming, video, reading, or multitasking.

Software is expected to play a big role too. The report says iOS 27 may include foldable-specific optimizations such as split-screen apps and multitasking features that feel closer to the iPad experience. If that happens, Apple would be positioning the device as more than a novelty screen trick.

As for the hardware itself, the current rumor set points to a roughly 7.7-inch inner display and a 5.3-inch cover screen. Earlier chatter suggested Apple might nearly eliminate the crease, though later leaks softened that claim and said the company may only be able to reduce it rather than remove it entirely.

Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has also predicted the device could feature a dual rear camera setup, a front-facing camera, and a Touch ID power button instead of Face ID. Pricing is expected to land above $1,999, and while a September debut is still possible, both Gurman and analyst Tim Long suggest availability could trail the iPhone 18 Pro rather than arrive right away.
