Gen5 storage is quickly becoming part of the standard checklist for modern AI PCs. If the storage pipeline becomes the bottleneck, even a strong CPU and GPU setup can feel held back when loading large models or moving heavy datasets. Lexar is aiming directly at that use case with the Lexar NM1090 PRO, a flagship PCIe 5.0 SSD under its Professional line.
The drive is offered in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB, and 8TB SSD capacities. According to the source report, the line reaches up to 14,400MB/s sequential reads, while 4K random read and write performance is rated at 2,000K and 2,100K IOPS. IT Home received the top-end 8TB version and shared a closer look at the hardware design.

Visually, the Lexar NM1090 PRO keeps the black-and-gold look that Lexar uses across the Professional series. The front of the SSD carries a custom black label with the Lexar logo and NM1090 PRO name printed in gold, giving the drive a more polished flagship feel than a bare utility component.

The back label lists the basic drive information and certification markings. IT Home notes that the PCB layout looks fairly clean, so the rear label sits flat. That matters more than it sounds, since a warped sticker can interfere with how well an M.2 drive contacts a heatsink or motherboard cooling plate.

The drive uses the standard 2280 M.2 format, so it should physically match mainstream desktop motherboards, laptops, and devices such as the PlayStation 5 that support this size. The source photos show a double-sided PCB packed with memory packages, which makes sense for the high-capacity 8TB model.

Even with that dense layout, the report says the 8TB SSD weighs about 10 grams including the sticker. For a very large-capacity solid-state drive, that keeps it on the lighter side while still giving the hardware a substantial feel in hand.

The main takeaway is straightforward: this is a high-end PCIe 5.0 SSD designed for users who need both capacity and throughput. For AI PC workloads, creator systems, gaming desktops, or large local project libraries, the Lexar NM1090 PRO is clearly being positioned as a premium storage option rather than a basic upgrade drive.
