Apple Music Says AI-Generated Songs Make Up a Huge Share of Uploads but Just 0.5% of Plays

Apple says AI-generated music now makes up a surprisingly large portion of new submissions on Apple Music, but listeners still are not engaging with those tracks in any meaningful way. According to comments cited by AppleInsider and relayed by IT Home, Apple Music vice president Oliver Schusser said more than one-third of newly submitted songs are now fully generated by AI.

Even so, the listening numbers remain tiny. Schusser said those fully synthetic tracks account for less than 0.5% of actual plays on the service. That gap suggests there is a major difference between how much AI-made material is being uploaded and how much real demand exists for it on consumer-facing streaming platforms.

Apple is reportedly trying to keep that imbalance from undermining the service. The company has developed internal technology that can identify whether music was created with AI models, and it may even be able to estimate how extensively those models were used in a given track. That gives Apple another way to review submissions beyond just trusting what gets disclosed by labels and distributors.

Schusser also said Apple requires record labels and distribution partners to disclose when AI is used in a song. Apple then uses its own internal systems to analyze submitted content and check whether those disclosures appear to be accurate. In other words, the company is trying to build both a policy layer and a technical review layer around the rapid rise of AI-generated music.

He also argued that music services supported primarily by free advertising can devalue music over time. That point was used to reinforce Apple Music’s long-standing paid-subscription model, which Apple frames as a way to preserve more consistent pricing and better artist compensation. Taken together, the remarks show that Apple sees Apple Music as a curated paid platform first, even as AI-created uploads continue to flood the pipeline.
