China says its public-facing earthquake alerts system has now expanded to reach more than 100 million smartphone users directly, marking a major milestone in the country’s multi-channel disaster warning rollout.

According to a report cited by IT Home, the broader public service network has already covered more than 330 million people in total. That figure includes more than 100,000 earthquake warning terminals nationwide, TV-based alert coverage across 11 provinces, more than 66 million broadcast and television households, and over 46 million users of the official WeChat mini program.

The report says direct smartphone delivery is one of the fastest and most effective ways to push warnings to the public. China’s earthquake monitoring network has built large-scale, real-time location management and second-level high-concurrency alert distribution so users near affected areas can be reached quickly after seismic activity is detected.

The current rollout already includes deeply integrated support on Huawei phones and Xiaomi phones. Instead of relying on a separate download, the unified earthquake warning service is built directly into the phone operating system, which allows the alert function to reach users in a more authoritative and immediate way.

Officials say the service has already shown practical value during several notable earthquakes. In events including quakes in Feidong, Yongning, Yongqing, and Qingyuan, warning messages were reportedly pushed to hundreds of thousands of nearby users within seconds after the quake. In one case highlighted by the report, medical staff in an operating room received an alert more than 20 seconds ahead of strong shaking and were able to stabilize equipment while continuing the procedure.

The National Earthquake Early Warning Project passed final acceptance in July 2024, and public services have accelerated since then. With smartphone integration now moving at scale, the system is becoming a more visible example of how built-in mobile features can be used for public safety instead of just convenience.
