Apple has reportedly unified the default wallpaper design across iOS 27 and macOS 27 for the first time, using a shared visual language inspired by “Celosia,” the cockscomb flower.

According to MacRumors, Apple has typically created separate default wallpapers for different operating systems in past years. The iPhone, iPad, Mac, and CarPlay wallpapers often had noticeably different design directions, even when they launched during the same software cycle.

This year, though, iOS 27 and macOS 27 Golden Gate both use the same Celosia wallpaper concept. The design draws from layered flower petals and folded paper, with large flowing surfaces, overlapping curved shapes, and soft shadow effects.

In light mode, the wallpaper shifts from a warm sand-gold tone into purple. In dark mode, it changes into a deeper indigo look with silver-blue accents. The curved shapes also fold together to form an abstract “27,” tying the wallpaper theme directly to the system version number.

Apple has extended the same design language to CarPlay as well. The new CarPlay wallpapers come in several color choices, including gray, purple, red, teal, blue, brown, dark blue, and green.

The default wallpapers for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 include standard, dynamic, and tinted variants, with both light and dark mode support. macOS 27 Golden Gate also includes a dynamic version, keeping the cross-platform look consistent while still adapting to each device category.

For users, this is a subtle but noticeable shift in Apple’s system design strategy. Instead of treating each platform’s default wallpaper as a separate visual statement, Apple appears to be using the wallpaper as a shared identity marker across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and CarPlay.

The change also fits the broader WWDC26 theme: Apple is making its operating systems feel more coordinated, not just in features but in the basic visual cues people see every time they unlock a device or start a new session.
