Apple Adds Drawing Tools to Messages in iOS 27 and macOS 27

Apple is expanding the iOS 27 Messages app with a new Drawing option, according to a June 12 report from MacRumors. The feature is also tied to macOS 27 Golden Gate, as Apple continues to make its communication and creative tools feel more consistent across devices.

In the iOS 27 Messages app, users can open the app drawer from the plus button in the lower-left corner and find a new “Drawing” entry. From there, the app brings in Apple’s full set of Markup tools, letting users sketch, annotate, and create simple visual notes directly inside a conversation.

Markup is Apple’s built-in annotation toolkit. It is already used across apps such as Mail, Photos, Files, and screenshots, and it supports freehand drawing, text, magnifier effects, shapes, and other quick visual markup features. Bringing those tools into Messages means users won’t need to jump into a separate app just to draw or mark something up before sending it.

The update also fits Apple’s broader cross-platform push. In macOS 27, Apple has added Markup support to Notes and Freeform, giving Mac users a similar set of tools in apps that are often used for brainstorming, planning, and visual organization.

The new drawing tools are only one part of the wider iOS 27 upgrade. Apple is also preparing several AI-related changes, including a standalone Siri app, automatic chat history deletion, AI writing tools, a grammar checker, AI wallpaper generation, and automatic Shortcut creation.

For everyday users, the Messages change is the kind of small feature that could become useful quickly. Instead of sending a plain text explanation, someone could circle part of an image, sketch a quick idea, or mark up a detail inside the chat itself. It’s a modest addition, but it makes iOS 27 Messages feel more flexible for visual communication.
