Apple appears to have made a meaningful upgrade to the iOS 27 Clean Up tool, with early testing showing cleaner AI object removal and fewer obvious problems when faces are involved.
Clean Up is an Apple Intelligence feature inside the Photos experience. It lets users remove distracting objects from the background of an image, then relies on AI to fill in the missing area so the final picture still looks natural.
According to testing cited by Wccftech, the version in iOS 26 could struggle badly in some scenes. When a removed object overlapped with a person or face, the filled-in area could become blurry, torn-looking, warped, or visibly artificial.
The iOS 27 version reportedly handles those situations better. The biggest improvement is around human faces, where the system now appears less likely to create distorted facial features or broken skin textures after an edit.
Edge handling also looks more polished. In examples shared by testers, transitions around the edited area appear smoother, and skin tones blend more naturally with the surrounding image instead of producing a pasted-on or smeared look.
That matters because AI photo cleanup tools often look impressive in simple background-removal demos but become much less reliable when they need to reconstruct complex human details. Faces are one of the hardest areas to fix convincingly, since even small distortions are easy to notice.
User Alvin on X said the best results require Apple’s cloud AI model rather than only local processing. In practice, users may need to choose an automatic or high-quality mode to get the strongest output from the upgraded tool.
The change also fits Apple’s broader approach to AI features on iPhone. Instead of presenting generative AI as a separate app only, Apple is placing it into familiar workflows such as Photos, Siri, Camera, and writing tools.
For U.S. iPhone users, the practical takeaway is simple: if the early tests hold up, AI photo editing in iOS 27 should feel more dependable for everyday cleanup tasks, especially when people are in the shot.
Apple has not framed this as a complete reinvention of photo editing. It is better understood as a refinement: fewer ugly artifacts, better face preservation, and a more usable Clean Up feature for normal photos rather than carefully selected demo images.
