At Computex 2026, technology outlet Windows Central spent some hands-on time with a prototype of the new Surface Laptop Ultra. The initial impressions are nothing short of glowing, with the outlet calling it potentially the best laptop ever made. It’s a bold claim, but Microsoft seems to have packed this premium machine with some seriously ambitious hardware.
From a design standpoint, the port selection is surprisingly generous. On the left side, you’ll find a full-size HDMI port and two USB-C ports. The right side features a USB-A port, a full-size SD card reader, and another USB-C port. Interestingly, the USB-C port on the right is noticeably larger than standard ports. While Microsoft hasn’t officially detailed why, Windows Central suspects it might double as a magnetic, breakaway connection resembling the old Surface Connect port.

User interaction looks like a major focus for this model. The Surface Laptop Ultra features the largest trackpad ever put on a Surface device, complete with support for the latest haptic feedback signals in Windows 11. The keyboard retains the excellent feel of the Surface Laptop 8, with the reviewer suggesting it could easily rival or even surpass Apple’s MacBook Pro. Topping it off is a gorgeous 15-inch Mini LED display supporting a 120Hz refresh rate, delivering incredibly sharp visuals and deep color contrast.
Under the hood, the laptop runs on the new NVIDIA RTX Spark processor. Since this is an Arm-based chipset, it relies on Windows 11’s Prism translation layer to run traditional x86 applications that haven’t been compiled for Arm yet. During real-world testing at the booth, several games and apps ran under emulation without any noticeable lag or stutter, though Microsoft and NVIDIA kept exact frame rate counters hidden. Cooling-wise, Microsoft equipped it with the largest fan in Surface history. It stays virtually silent under light tasks, but you can definitely hear the fan whirring from a few feet away when running heavy workloads.
