Apple is continuing to turn Apple CarPlay into a more capable AI surface. After support for ChatGPT and Perplexity, the latest addition is Grok, the chatbot from xAI, which can now be used inside compatible car dashboards through the iPhone app.
The update builds on changes introduced with iOS 26.4, where Apple opened the door for voice-focused conversational apps inside Apple CarPlay. That change made it possible for AI assistants to move beyond the phone screen and into the driving environment, so long as the user is connected through an iPhone.
According to the report, xAI enabled the new experience by updating the iPhone version of Grok. Once connected through Apple CarPlay, drivers can access the chatbot in a way that feels similar to other supported AI services. Users can jump back into recent conversations or start a new one from scratch without leaving the car interface.
The overall interaction still centers on voice, which is the sensible approach in a driving context. Instead of turning the screen into a text-heavy chat window, the design is meant to let people talk naturally while keeping visual distraction to a minimum. In that sense, Grok is following the same basic in-car pattern already established by ChatGPT and Perplexity.
What helps Grok stand out are a couple of extra controls highlighted in the report. One is a temporary mute function that lets the conversation pause without ending the session entirely. The other is voice switching directly inside the Apple CarPlay app, so users can change how the assistant sounds without backing out into broader phone settings.
For commuters who already rely on in-car voice tools, that kind of integration matters more than it may seem at first glance. It turns Apple CarPlay into a hub for multiple AI chatbots, not just a route to maps, music, and messages. The result is a dashboard experience that keeps expanding as AI services compete for everyday use.
Apple hasn’t positioned any one chatbot as the default winner here. Instead, the company appears to be making room for several options and letting users decide which one fits their habits.
