Sony has officially introduced the Sony Xperia 1 VIII, its latest flagship phone, with a stronger focus on camera hardware, a refreshed rear design, and Qualcomm’s newest top-tier mobile chip.
The biggest hardware change is in the camera system. On the back, the phone uses a 48MP main camera with a 1/1.35-inch sensor, a 48MP ultra-wide camera with a 1/1.56-inch sensor, and a 48MP telephoto camera. Unlike earlier Xperia models that used continuous optical zoom, this one moves to a fixed 70mm equivalent focal length, roughly 2.9x zoom, paired with a much larger 1/1.56-inch telephoto sensor. Sony says that sensor is about four times larger than the telephoto unit in the previous generation, while also allowing higher-resolution crop zoom from the base focal length.

Sony also redesigned the camera island. Instead of the older vertical layout, the new module uses a square bump with the three lenses, flash, and Sony branding arranged in a squared composition. The company calls this look ORE, saying the texture and finish are inspired by natural mineral surfaces.
On the imaging side, Sony says every rear camera now supports RAW multi-frame processing. The goal is to improve dynamic range and reduce noise in darker scenes while keeping highlights from blowing out and protecting shadow detail. The phone also adds an AI Camera Assistant through Xperia Intelligence, which can analyze the scene, including the subject and even weather conditions, then suggest color, lens effect, and aperture adjustments that the user can accept or fine-tune.
Powering the phone is the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5. Sony is offering a 12GB RAM and 256GB storage base model, along with a 16GB and 1TB version that is limited to the Natural Gold color and sold through Sony’s own store. The phone still includes a microSD card slot, which is increasingly rare in the flagship segment.

Battery capacity is 5000mAh, with support for 30W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. Sony says a full charge can last about two days. Up front, the handset keeps a 6.5-inch LTPO OLED display without a punch-hole cutout, with a 1Hz to 120Hz variable refresh rate, 1080p+ resolution, and a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The 12MP front camera sits in the top bezel.
Sony is also holding on to several features long-time Xperia users tend to care about, including a 3.5mm headphone jack, stereo speakers tuned with Walkman know-how, a physical two-stage camera shutter key, and IP65/IP68 dust and water resistance. The phone measures about 74 x 162 x 8.3mm and weighs 200 grams.

For software support, Sony promises four major Android version updates and six years of security patches. The phone comes in Obsidian Black, Slate Silver, Pomegranate Red, and the Sony-store-exclusive Natural Gold. Sony has opened preorders in parts of Europe and Asia, with pricing varying by memory configuration and market, including a Hong Kong starting price of HK$12,099 for the 12GB + 256GB version. Sony is not planning a North American release for the Sony Xperia 1 VIII.
