Sony has officially introduced the Sony Xperia 1 VIII, and the update leans hard into the things Xperia buyers usually care about most: camera hardware, manual-friendly controls, expandable storage, and a design that still does things the broader flagship market has mostly walked away from.
The headline hardware change is the telephoto system. Sony says the phone uses a much larger 1/1.56-inch telephoto sensor than the previous generation, while the rear setup overall includes a 48MP main camera, a 48MP ultra-wide camera, and a 48MP telephoto camera. Instead of continuing with the older continuous optical zoom approach, this model uses a fixed 70mm equivalent telephoto focal length at about 2.9x zoom, then relies on the higher-resolution sensor for crop-based reach beyond that point.
Sony also changed the camera island design. Rather than the older vertical strip, the new module uses a squared layout that groups the lenses, flash, and logo together. Sony calls the look ‘ORE’ and says it draws inspiration from natural mineral textures, which fits with the subtle texture treatment applied to both the back panel and the camera area.
On the imaging side, Sony says every rear camera now supports RAW multi-frame compositing. The goal is to improve dynamic range, hold onto more shadow detail, and cut noise in darker scenes without blowing out highlights. The phone also introduces an AI Camera Assistant under the Xperia Intelligence umbrella, designed to analyze the scene and suggest changes to color, lens effects, or aperture-style settings before the user decides whether to accept them.
Powering the phone is the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 platform. Sony pairs it with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage in the base version, while a higher-tier 16GB and 1TB option is also available in select markets. The phone keeps the microSD card slot too, which is still a meaningful differentiator now that most high-end phones have dropped expandable storage entirely.
Battery capacity is 5000mAh, with support for 30W wired charging and 15W wireless charging. Sony says the phone can deliver about two days of use on a charge. Up front, it sticks with a 6.5-inch LTPO OLED panel without a punch-hole cutout, offering a 1Hz to 120Hz variable refresh rate and a 1080p+ resolution in a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. The 12MP front camera remains housed in the top bezel.
Sony also keeps several enthusiast-friendly features intact, including a 3.5mm headphone jack, stereo speakers tuned with input from the Walkman team, a physical two-stage camera shutter button, IP65 and IP68 protection, and a fairly compact body for a flagship phone. The company says it will provide four major Android version upgrades and six years of security patches, which gives the Sony Xperia 1 VIII a more competitive software support window than many earlier Xperia models.
Pricing starts at HK$12,099 in Hong Kong for the 12GB and 256GB version, with higher-capacity trims going well above that in Europe and Japan. Sony has also lined up preorder offers in several markets, including bundled audio gear or accessory discounts. One notable omission remains North America, where Sony reportedly has no launch plan for this model.
