Google used its 2026 I/O developer conference to introduce Wear OS 7, the next major update for its smartwatch platform. The company is positioning the release around two practical upgrades: longer runtime and a smarter on-watch experience.
On battery performance, Google says watches moving from Wear OS 6 to Wear OS 7 can see runtime improve by as much as 10%. That kind of gain may not sound dramatic on paper, but for wearable devices it can make day-to-day charging feel a little less tight, especially for users who rely on health tracking and notifications all day.
Google is also adding a new Gemini entry point for select smartwatches scheduled to launch in 2026. The company says that support will enable agent-style tasks on compatible devices, though it hasn’t shared a full list of supported watch models or the complete feature scope yet.
For now, the announcement is more about direction than hardware specifics. Even so, it makes Google’s priorities pretty clear: improve efficiency, bring more AI-driven interactions to the wrist, and make future Wear OS watches feel more capable without asking users to give up battery life to get there.
