Apple Maps in iOS 27 Adds AI-Improved Flyover Vegetation and Local Lists

Apple is giving Apple Maps a more polished look in iOS 27, with upgrades focused on Flyover visuals and local discovery. According to a report from Appleinsider cited by IT Home, the new Maps version improves the way vegetation appears in city Flyover views and adds a new restaurant-focused discovery feature called Local Lists.

The Flyover change is aimed at one of the more visible weak spots in 3D map rendering: trees and large green spaces. In older versions, zooming into dense areas such as New York’s Central Park could make tree canopies look blocky or rough, especially when the 3D model was viewed closely.

In iOS 27, Apple is reportedly combining aerial imagery with artificial intelligence to create richer branch and canopy detail. The result should be more natural-looking vegetation and a higher-quality 3D effect in supported cities.

This visual upgrade is not available everywhere yet. The report says the improved Flyover vegetation can currently be seen only in some cities, including New York and London, rather than across the entire Apple Maps coverage area.

That limited rollout suggests Apple may be testing the new rendering pipeline city by city. It also fits the nature of 3D map improvements, which usually depend on local imagery, modeling data, and quality control rather than a simple app-wide switch.

The second major addition is Local Lists, a feature designed to highlight popular restaurants in a specific area or city. Instead of relying only on static editorial lists, Apple uses interaction data inside the Maps app to identify places that are drawing more attention from users.

Local Lists are expected to refresh regularly. Each list can show restaurant names, opening hours, price ranges, and food photos, making it easier for users to compare options without jumping immediately to another app.

If a user finds a place worth saving, they can tap the plus button to add it to their map markers. Opening a listing also provides more detailed information, keeping the discovery flow inside Apple Maps.

Apple is also emphasizing privacy around the feature. The company says the insights are generated from privacy-preserving data and are not tied back to individual users. That privacy framing is important because the feature depends on patterns of in-app interaction.

For now, Local Lists will first launch in the United States. Apple plans to expand the feature to more countries and regions later, though the report does not give a specific global rollout schedule.

Together, these updates show Apple trying to improve both sides of Maps: the visual experience for exploring cities and the practical experience of finding nearby places. The AI-enhanced Flyover changes make cities look more realistic, while Local Lists make Maps more useful for everyday restaurant discovery.

For U.S. users, the most immediate benefit may be restaurant browsing. For travelers and map enthusiasts, the more interesting change is likely the upgraded 3D vegetation, especially if Apple gradually brings the same rendering quality to more major cities.
