Samsung and JR East plan Welcome Suica Mobile support for overseas Galaxy phones in 2027

Samsung Electronics Japan said it has reached a partnership with JR East that aims to bring Welcome Suica Mobile support to overseas-sold Samsung Galaxy phones in the first half of 2027.

Based on the official announcement, users with supported overseas Galaxy devices will be able to open a digital Sakura Card through the Welcome Suica Mobile app starting in 2027. Through Samsung Pay, they are expected to handle top-ups, commuter pass purchases, discounted train tickets, and ordinary train Green Car tickets.

Samsung and JR East also said they plan to bring the broader Mobile Suica e-money experience to Galaxy phones sold inside Japan, which would expand support beyond the travel-focused Sakura Card use case.

For travelers visiting Japan, the biggest convenience is obvious. Instead of stopping at a ticket machine or staffed counter after arrival, they could use an eligible overseas Samsung Galaxy phone to ride trains and buses directly and also pay for small everyday purchases with the same device.

The report notes that Welcome Suica, often called the Sakura Card, is a transit card created for inbound visitors to Japan. It currently exists in both physical and digital forms. The physical version is anonymous, carries no deposit, and stays valid for 28 days, while the digital version currently works with Apple Pay and remains valid for 180 days.

Because the card follows Japan’s transport IC standard, it can also interoperate across other major regions and systems, including PASMO, ICOCA, TOICA, and Kitaca. That means the practical value goes beyond a single railway network and extends to transit access and small-ticket retail payments in multiple areas.
