Apple Releases iOS 26.5 With Encrypted RCS, Maps Ad Framework, and New EU Device Pairing Features

Apple has released iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5, bringing a mix of messaging, Maps, regulatory, and security changes that make this one of the more meaningful late-cycle updates before the company shifts attention to iOS 27 at WWDC 2026.

Apple Releases iOS 26.5 With Encrypted RCS, Maps Ad Framework, and New EU Device Pairing Features

The most notable addition is RCS encryption for conversations between iPhone and Android devices. Apple says end-to-end encryption is now part of the RCS Universal Profile 3.0 standard, provided Android users are on the latest version of Google Messages. Encrypted RCS chats display a lock icon, and Apple says the protection level is comparable to iMessage. The same standard also covers support for message editing and deletion, cross-platform Tapback reactions, and inline replies to specific messages.

Apple is also laying more groundwork inside Apple Maps. The app now adds a Suggested Places feature that can surface recommendations based on a user’s location and recent searches. At the same time, Apple is preparing search-result ad placements that are expected to start rolling out this summer, with iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5 providing the technical framework behind that change.

For users in the European Union, the update includes several interoperability improvements tied to the Digital Markets Act. Compatible third-party earbuds can now support an AirPods-style proximity pairing flow, which lets users pair more quickly when the accessory is brought near an iPhone. Third-party accessories can also receive forwarded iPhone notifications and display Live Activities, though Apple notes hardware makers still need to implement support and that some of these behaviors remain limited to EU-region accounts and devices.

The release also includes a large batch of security fixes. Apple says iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5 address more than 50 vulnerabilities, including issues related to WebKit, the kernel, image processing, Spotlight, Shortcuts, screenshots, and other system components. According to the report, WebKit alone received fixes for 10 vulnerabilities that could have led to crashes or sensitive data exposure.

Other smaller changes are tucked into the update as well. Apple has added a new wallpaper that matches the Pride Luminance watch face and band, improved time specificity in Reminders, enabled automatic Bluetooth pairing for Magic accessories after a USB-C connection, and added App Store annual subscription installment options for users in the United States. Apple is also said to have prepared more technical groundwork for app sideloading support in Brazil. Taken together, iOS 26.5 looks like a broad polish-and-platform update rather than a single-feature release.
