Apple's iOS 27 Could Let Users Choose Third-Party AI Models Like Gemini and Claude

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple is preparing a major change for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27: users may be able to choose third-party AI models to power different Apple Intelligence features. That could affect tasks like text writing and editing, image generation, and other generative AI workflows across Apple devices.

Apple first introduced its Apple Intelligence platform in 2024, and so far ChatGPT has been the only outside AI option tied into features like Siri, Writing Tools, and Image Playground. Gurman had already reported in March that Apple was exploring a similar choice model for Siri, letting users swap ChatGPT for another external assistant. The new report says that idea is now expanding much further inside the operating system.

According to people familiar with Apple’s plans, the updated system would let users pick supported AI providers from apps installed through the App Store. Internally, Apple is said to have already tested integrations with Google and Anthropic, which means services tied to Gemini and Anthropic Claude are among the names currently in the mix. Apple declined to comment publicly.

Inside internal builds of iOS 27, Apple reportedly refers to this capability as “Extensions.” The idea is that users would open Settings and choose which model they want sitting underneath Apple Intelligence features. Testers have even found a prompt saying Extensions can provide on-demand access to generative AI abilities from installed apps through Siri, Writing Tools, Image Playground, and related system features.

Apple is also said to be preparing a dedicated App Store section for compatible AI apps, while still continuing to offer its own in-house models. At the same time, the company plans to warn users that it isn’t responsible for content generated by outside models, which makes sense if third-party AI models become deeply woven into system-level tools.

The move would give users more flexibility, but it would also break OpenAI’s current exclusive position inside Apple’s ecosystem. Gurman says Apple had high expectations for ChatGPT usage when the integration launched in 2024, but actual use apparently came in below what both companies expected. The relationship has also grown more complicated over time, with OpenAI reportedly trying to recruit Apple engineers for AI hardware work.

Beyond model selection, Gurman says Apple is also working on a feature that would let users choose different Siri voices to better distinguish between Apple’s own models and outside assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude. Previous Bloomberg reporting has also pointed to a revamped Siri experience, a standalone Siri app, a camera-related Siri mode, new AI editing tools in Photos, and new ways to create custom credentials in Wallet.
