Apple Says iPhone 17 Pro Will Handle an Entire MLS Live Broadcast for the First Time image 1

Apple says the upcoming Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Houston Dynamo FC match on May 24 will mark a first for the company: the entire MLS live broadcast will be captured with iPhone 17 Pro units instead of relying on a mix of phones and traditional full-size TV cameras.

According to Apple, every camera angle in the production will come from the phone. That includes warm-ups, player introductions, views from inside the goal, and more of the in-stadium atmosphere. The pitch is simple: because the iPhone is smaller and lighter, crews can place it in spots that would normally be harder for standard broadcast rigs to reach.

That should give viewers more dynamic perspectives, especially along the sideline, near the goalmouth, and in narrow access areas where bulky equipment is less practical. Apple is framing the experiment as a new step in Apple sports production, not just a one-off tech demo.

This isn’t the first time Apple has used the phone in pro sports coverage. Back in September 2025, some Friday Night Baseball shots were already filmed on iPhone 17 Pro hardware, though only for selected segments rather than a full match. Apple later expanded that approach into parts of the 2025 MLS Cup and other production work tied to MLS and Friday Night Baseball.

What makes this event different is the all-in commitment. Apple says the match will be produced entirely with iPhone 17 Pro devices, making it the first large professional sports live stream from the company to leave out conventional broadcast cameras altogether.
