iPhone 18 display rumor says Apple may use an older OLED material set for the standard model

A new iPhone 18 display rumor says Apple may take a step back on the panel used in the standard version of the phone. According to a report cited by Wccftech, rising memory costs may be pushing Apple to make trade-offs in its broader hardware strategy, with display quality potentially becoming one of the areas where the base model gives way to the Pro lineup.

iPhone 18 display rumor says Apple may use an older OLED material set for the standard model

The report says the standard iPhone 18 could use either an M14 or an M12 Plus OLED panel, with M12 Plus currently seen as the more likely option. If that happens, it would mean the regular model is relying on an older OLED material generation rather than moving fully in step with Apple’s newer flagship panel technologies.

By comparison, the iPhone 18 Pro models are expected to use an M16 material set and move from blue fluorescent OLED technology to blue phosphorescent OLED, a shift that should bring noticeable gains in power efficiency.

For context, M12 Plus is considered a modestly improved version of M12. That material set previously appeared in phones such as Apple’s iPhone 14 Pro and Samsung’s Galaxy S23, and it now sits well behind newer generations like M13 and M14 in terms of overall panel progression.

The same report also suggests Apple is unlikely to talk openly about any display downgrade at launch. Instead, the company would be expected to keep the spotlight on more visible selling points like the A20 chip, camera changes, and industrial design, while continuing to describe the screen in broader marketing terms as an advanced OLED material set.
