Apple is reportedly preparing a new Safari feature that could make large sets of browser tabs much easier to manage. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, test versions of Safari built for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27 now include an AI tab organization option that automatically sorts open pages into groups by topic.

That would build on the tab groups feature Apple originally introduced with Safari 15 in 2021. The earlier version let users save and organize related tabs manually. Now, five years later, Apple appears to be working on a smarter system that can handle that sorting process on its own while still allowing people to keep the layout they arranged by hand.

In Gurman’s description, the updated Tab Groups interface includes a new test button near the top center of the switcher. The label is simple and direct: organize tabs. When turned on, Safari reportedly shows a prompt explaining that open tabs will be grouped automatically based on browsing topics.

Apple doesn’t appear to be branding the feature as part of Apple Intelligence, but the underlying idea is still clearly AI-driven. The design sounds similar to the smart categorization tools Apple has already used elsewhere, such as automatically sorting checklist items in Notes into related categories.

If Apple keeps the feature on track, Safari could get one of its more practical quality-of-life upgrades in years. For people who constantly juggle research pages, shopping tabs, work references, and random reading lists, automatic AI tab organization inside Safari could save a lot of cleanup time.

The feature is widely expected to surface around WWDC, where Apple typically previews major updates tied to its next operating system cycle. As always, though, the final feature set could still change before the public releases of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27.
