A fresh render leak suggests Sony isn’t throwing out its flagship phone identity just yet, even if one major design detail may be changing. According to the report carried by IT Home and attributed to leaker Roland Quandt, the upcoming Sony Xperia 1 VIII is expected to launch on May 13 and appears in a new batch of images that line up with earlier leaks.
The newly shared renders reportedly show a phone that keeps Sony’s familiar front-facing approach. The display is said to use a 19.5:9 flat panel, while the top and bottom bezels remain more noticeable than what many rivals now offer. That means Sony may still be prioritizing its traditional layout over the full edge-to-edge look other premium Android phones have adopted.

The biggest visual change seems to be on the back. Instead of the long vertical camera strip that has become one of Xperia’s signature design cues, the phone may move to a squarer camera island positioned close to the side of the device. If that holds true, the Sony Xperia 1 VIII could look meaningfully different from recent generations while still staying recognizable as a Sony flagship.
One detail likely to matter to photography-focused users is that Sony appears to be keeping the dedicated shutter key. That’s a small thing on paper, but it remains one of the brand’s most distinctive hardware choices. For people who like shooting in landscape orientation and using a half-press to focus, that button still offers a camera-like feel that many mainstream phones no longer try to provide.
The leak also says the side-mounted fingerprint reader remains integrated into the power button, rather than shifting to an under-display solution. That suggests Sony is sticking with a setup it has used for years instead of chasing a trend just for the sake of matching competitors.

As for colors, earlier reporting referenced four expected finishes: Graphite Black, Iolite Silver, Garnet Red, and Native Gold. The latest set of renders reportedly does not include the Native Gold version, so it’s still unclear whether that color will appear at launch or remain limited to internal materials and earlier leak chatter.
None of these details are official yet, and Sony hasn’t confirmed the final hardware design in public. Still, this render leak paints a pretty clear picture: the Xperia 1 VIII may keep the core Sony experience intact while updating the rear camera styling enough to feel new.
