Sony has officially confirmed that it will unveil a new Xperia phone on May 13, and all signs point to the upcoming Sony Xperia 1 VIII. The teaser image appears to match the rear camera layout that has already shown up in several earlier leaks.

Based on the announcement and the details already circulating, the phone is expected to arrive in four colors: Graphite Black, Iolite Silver, Garnet Red, and Native Gold. The most noticeable design change is a new square-shaped rear camera module, with Sony’s branding moved into that camera area.

The rumored hardware points to a familiar flagship formula with a few notable refinements. The Sony Xperia 1 VIII is expected to use a 6.5-inch 120Hz OLED display with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and FHD+ HDR resolution, while Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 should handle processing duties alongside 12GB of memory.

Sony also appears to be keeping a few features that have become increasingly rare in premium phones, including a 3.5mm headphone jack and dual-SIM support. That combination could make the device stand out a bit more among Android flagships that have gradually stripped away legacy hardware options.

On the camera side, the report says Sony may move away from the continuous optical zoom approach used on the previous generation. Instead, this model is expected to adopt a more conventional 48MP periscope telephoto camera with a fixed 3x optical zoom. If that change holds, Sony may be prioritizing consistency and image quality over zoom flexibility.

Sony hasn’t published a full spec sheet yet, so the final hardware details still need formal confirmation. Even so, the company’s own teaser now gives the May 13 launch real weight, and it looks increasingly likely that the Sony Xperia 1 VIII will be the centerpiece of the event.
